About Alexandra and Central Otago

Alexandra was founded during the Central Otago gold rush in the 1860s.

In  2024 the population of Alexandra is approximately 6000.

Alexandra is the service center for a significant stone-fruit industry which is celebrated by a blossom festival in the town each spring.

Grape production is another major fast growing industry in the Central Otago Wine Region with a number of award winning wines produced in the area.

The town is a popular holiday destination mainly due to the hot and sunny climate during summer, with lake Dunstan (10 minutes north) a popular location for boating, swimming and fishing.

There are many cycle trails in the area with Alexandra being a popular place to use as a home base.

Alexandra is only approximately 90 minutes drive to Cardrona Ski Field, Wanaka and Remarkables and Coronet Peak Ski Fields, Queenstown.
