About Alexandra and Central Otago

Alexandra was founded during the Central Otago gold rush in the 1860s.

In June  2016 the Central Otago Region had a population of 5300.

Alexandra is the service center for a significant stone-fruit industry which is celebrated by a blossom festival in the town each spring.

Grape production is another major fast growing industry in the Central Otago Wine Region with a number of award winning wines produced in the area.

The town is a popular holiday destination mainly due to the hot and sunny climate during summer, with lake Dunstan (10 minutes north) a popular location for boating swimming and fishing.

The Central Otago Rail Trail is also a major attraction to the area, the Rail Trail is a popular 150-kilometre walking and cycling trail that follows the old train tracks from Clyde to Middlemarch, with between 10,000-12,000 users annually as a very conservative estimate.
